What is a Scapula Fracture? The scapula is the flat triangular bone at the back of the shoulder (also called the shoulder blade). It connects the shoulder, arm, and chest together. A scapula fracture means a crack or break in this shoulder blade bone. 👉 This fracture is relatively rare because the scapula is well protected by strong surrounding muscles and bones. 👉 It usually occurs due to high-energy trauma such as a road traffic accident, fall from height, or a direct heavy blow. Symptoms: Severe pain in the back of the shoulder Inability to move the arm Swelling and bruising around the shoulder or back Difficulty in lifting the arm Treatment: Most scapula fractures heal without surgery (conservative treatment) – using an arm sling, pain medications, and physiotherapy. If the fracture is significantly displaced or involves the shoulder joint surface (glenoid cavity), then surgery may be required.
